Selected Critical Acclaim and Reviews

There are several things about the Linha Singers that I appreciate. It is mainly the fact that they create a bridge over the chasm between classical and commercial music. The band also discovers the long lost values of ancient Czech music, which it performs with perfection that is without parallel in instrumental music. Last but not least - the Linha Singers motivate contemporary authors to create new compositions, which the band performs with great enthusiasm and perfect interpretation. That is why I am among those who cooperate with the ensemble and that is why I am always looking forward to their concerts. I ignore critics who claim that genres cannot be combined. I think there is actually a new genre being created…

I have listened to a number of recordings of the Linha Singers, but this is the first time a concerted face is looking at me. I am sure that Händl and Schubert would give a smile at this transformation of their music. I am also sure that all the old Czech and Slovak masters would appreciate that the band makes its way through the centuries to reach them and free them from archives covered in dust, sometimes with a flirtatious kiss. I myself perceive these charming formations as a mere disguise at a gaily-colored ball of music. It is only our mask that we come to like and to whom we say: "It is you, unknown beauty, with whom I want to dance all night." However, nothing prevents the partner from telling his lady after several dances: "Remove your mask, now I know you better, and I know that I will like you even without the mask, in your natural beauty. . . " Feeling guilty, I confess that in many cases (even after midnight), I would not insist on removing the mask and would not force Velasquez's Venus with a mirror, resting on a bed, to turn to the other side... I would enjoy the charming disguise and would surely be grateful to the tailor for such apparel!

Compositions interpreted by this ensemble sound unobtrusive, respecting the spirit of the old humble authors. In addition to complete works, the ensemble also performs musical fragments with the style of the time, delicacy and respect for the ancient art arranged for human voice, flute, cembalo, strings and drums. I have great admiration for this band, whose interpretational method creates a perceptive artistic atmosphere.

Classical music has simply made it a rule that we cannot repeat anything that has appeared in the past or copy a neighbor or even oneself. It is therefore no heroism that we all keep searching and it is therefore not a tragedy that we often do not find anything interesting; we only sometimes peck at a bit of corn, just like a blind hen. A lot of those, who at last find something, drop out and only a handful remain that receive critical acclaim. We should all rejoice, but we do not. Success is scrutinized very closely and judged with strong feelings, which cannot be fought by common sense. However, as nothing lasts forever, an exemplary and diligent artist is spared and acknowledged at last. This is usually when the public has already turned its back on them. Following an overall review, the artist's work is talked of in a way that does not favor or damage anybody, but comes as an act of good will... I hope that the Linha Singers never need such good will. The ensemble works independently, year after year, and takes journeys to find the new. Its audience is not incidental. If the ensemble becomes a "living legend" with the sustained support of its audience, it will not be attributable to long hair, decibels or incidents, but only to a resumed dialogue that the ensemble maintains with the real classics.
